In this blog we share our tips for creating a sensory friendly workspace.  Creating a functional, sensory friendly workspace for your students is essential. A well thought-out workspace will help students focus, concentrate and be more comfortable within the classroom environment. Providing them with the tools they need to succeed.

Adjustable Desks & Chairs

Choose desks and chairs that are adjustable in height to accomodate different needs and preferences. This flexibility allows each student to find a comfortable and safe position to sit and learn. Adjustable wobble stools are perfect for just this. Featuring a slightly concave and weighted base the adjustable stool can be altered to suit different heights, and promotes 'active sitting'. This allows students to fidget freely, helping their bodies and minds stay engaged and on task. If your classroom already has adjustable chairs, try adding a wobble cushion. Available in junior and senior sizes, these also promote 'active sitting' and help encourage correct posture.

Another flexible but fun seating option are sitting balls with feet.  They have 6 small feet to prevent them from rolling away when used as a sitting ball chair. Students can sit and bounce, balance and move, improving blood circulation and attention span.

Desktop Screening & Visual Supports

Some students find the classroom environment overwhelming, or become easily distracted. A simple pop up desk screen helps provide a dedicated workspace away from disruption. Lightweight and portable, they are easy to move from one desk to another. Try our multi-packs of 5 or 10 for added value.

Incorporate visual supports such as visual timetables, task boards and visual timers to assist students with understanding expectations and transitioning between activities. Use clear and concise visuals with minimal text to support students with diverse learning needs.

Handwriting Resources

Consider using writing slopes, hand and wrist covers and writing grips to support students with fine motor challenges. These tools can help improve handwriting and overall comfort during desk-based activities. Our writing slopes have a 20 degree angle, which helps to ensure greater comfort and more effective skills development. Available in clear, red, blue and wooden finishes, they cater to different student likes.

Made in the UK by our seamstresses our hand and wrist covers are designed for those who like to chew on cuffs or bite the back of their hands. For some added deep pressure input to the forearms, give our wrist weights a go. They help provide extra sensory input with handwriting, fine motor skills and hand-eye-coordination.

Our multi-use writing grips fit either the right or left hand and can also be used on pens and even paintbrushes to support a range of activities.

Sensory Tools

Allow students to personalise their workspaces with sensory-friendly tools and accessories to help meet their unique sensory needs. This could be ear defenders to reduce noise, weighted lap pads to improve attention span and reduce fidgeting or fidget toys or therapy putty to keep hands busy whilst concentrating on set tasks. Allow students to use these tools discreetly at their desk to help them stay focused and regulated during learning activities.
